JUN 05, 2012 KATHMANDU – After a week of demolition of Constituent assembly, Major parties are now in homework to revive the assembly saying that to draft the constitution without holding the new election. President Rambaran Yadav highlighted the need of consensus between parties and amend the law accordingly to go further steps. he stressed that consensus is the only solution to end the current situation.

Two separate delegations on Monday met President Ram Baran Yadav and requested him to sack Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai immediately and revive the Constituent Assembly to end the current political impasse.

In the meetings, the President, however, made it clear that he is bound by the constitution and stressed that political consensus is a must, without which he can do “nothing.”

Earlier in the day, the President held a meeting with nine former Nepali Congress lawmakers who have been demanding revival of the dissolved CA.

In the meeting, the lawmakers urged the President that the resurrection of the CA was the only viable option to end the current constitutional and political deadlock and an “easy way” to complete the remaining tasks of constitution writing.

“I cannot take any step without political consensus,” the President told the NC lawmakers, adding, “Everyone will abide by decisions taken by the parties.”

The President told us that “only political consensus among the parties can resolve the current deadlock and asked us to put pressure on political forces to strike accord as soon as possible,” former NC lawmaker Dhan Raj Gurung said.

On Sunday, 61 former lawmakers of the NC had issued a statement demanding revival of the CA to promulgate a new constitution.

However, on Monday, some NC lawmakers who had signed the statement did not meet the President. “We should not drag the President into this unnecessarily. We must exert pressure on the parties for the CA resurrection,” an NC ex-lawmaker said.

A delegation of the Broader Madhesi Front also urged the President to sack PM Baburam Bhattarai and make way for consensus. BMF leader Upendra Yadav and other leaders reached the President’s office at Shital Niwas and requested the latter to resolve the political deadlock by holding a roundtable conference.

“We have to find a way to end the political deadlock and it should begin with the removal of the PM,” Yadav said.

The BMF also submitted a memorandum to the President asking him to remove the PM. It also termed the PM’s decision to hold fresh CA elections as unconstitutional.

According to Yadav, the BMF made such a request as the President “has the power to resolve the deadlock” as the guardian of the constitution.
