16 Parties asks Maoists to implement past pacts

JAN 09, 2012 KATHMANDU – Multi Party meeting held in Kathmandu today asks Maoist Party of Nepal to implement all the past agreements before moving ahead to draft a new constitution and agree on other political agenda in the future.

Sixteen political parties including the main opposition parties—Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML—Monday urged the UCPN (Maoist) to abide by the agreements inked in the past.

A joint meeting of 16 political parties, held at Singha Durbar in the Capital, issued a joint statement, stating that the Maoist has raised serious doubts by posing obstruction in the peace process. The meeting also concluded that the Maoist has backtracked from the peace process.

Accusing the Maoist of altering the agreement on issues pertaining to constitution drafting forged by the Dispute Resolution Sub-Committee, the political parties urged the Maoist to be serious and responsible for the same.

The meeting also drew the attention of the government and the Maoist to abide by the past pacts and seek a way out from the transitional period.

In many cases, due to inner party disagreements derailed the peace process by raising the different issues even they are not even committed to fulfill the past agreements. Timeline has almost near to end the constitution assembly which was extended for 3rd time two months ago and progress are none to reach to the task of drafting and implementing new constitution by first week of May 2012 in which the tenure will be last to extend as supreme court has already direct the government and other parties not to extend the tenure anymore in the future.
