NRN, Dual Citizenship and Nepal

FEB 11, 2012 Kathmandu – Nepal a politically unstable, geographically shattered, and financially one of the poorest Nation in Asia having more than 60% farmers and country running on financial support of donors, tourism and remittances.

As Nepal emerged from the Monarchy to federalism, and level of living has improved in recent years, it has many negative aspects also emerged in the background. As political insurgency started in Nepal back in 1996, many youths who has potentials of getting jobs and make their living by their own went out of country to seek foreign employment in various countries in the world. Globalization has made it easy  for people to seek job out of their own country but problem of migration also emerged along with the job and better financial status.

In the events of working out of Nepal, some rich and educated entrepreneurs feel that they need an organization to cover their issues of migration, security, and other issues of legality where they were currently residing.
It emerges an organization named NRN (Non Residential Nepalese) under the founder chairmanship of  Dr. Upendra Mahato, (The student turn Businessman living in Belarus).

Years have passed with little progress in the principle but some of the Members has succeeding in their goal of having position and promote their political and financial business further, even its main agenda was to support people in need where government side is absent, it is now developing like a political party which has seen in the recent event of international working committee election held in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Nepal a vibrant country for investors if the political situation come to an end with the prospective implementation of  consensus and agreement made between political fractions, integrate Maoist combatants to the security forces and controlling over the corruptions. There are no reason to be afraid to invest in Nepal as its neighbors are one of the most populated but financially better sound countries in these years. As India and China having more than 10% annual growth rates in recent years, we are just in the cross road between them and we have thousands of reasons that we can take benefit from this two very important Nations in the world today.

In this context, Some of our brothers and sisters who have migrated in recent years to the foreign countries with the hope of better life and  thinking that Nepal could not be a place to live and “feel that being a Nepali is a trademark of being a poorest person in the world”, are seeking the share of power and integrity that may soon come to us, talking about unwanted and unrealistic subject of “Dual Citizenship”, which may benefit those stake seekers but not for the Nation in the long term.
Government also came to their influence in some cases and in a process to made a law that a Nepali who is living out of Nepal for certain period of time, they will be called NRN, this is fine but the matter of dual citizenship is something smell unpleasant.

There are many country in the world who do have dual citizenship protocol which is not as described in ours. There are terms and conditions, which must benefit the nation not the person who holds it. In our side it is not even necessary because most of the so called NRN’s who seeks dual citizenship are just a Labor in their residing country where they don’t even have provision to apply for a citizenship of those countries.
For an example, in the recent NRN- ICC election in Kathmandu, Most of the candidates has brightly focused on the topic of dual citizenship and unfortunately vice president elected Mr. Rameshwor Shah is still in a working visa of United Arab emirates. In his agenda of future NRN he have focused mainly in the dual passport issue which himself is not liable for.

If we see the fact sheet of NRN or people living outside of Nepal, as assumed of more than three (30,00,000) Million Nepalese are living and working out of Nepal, 90% of them are in the Gulf and Asian (Malaysia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, Afghanistan, Brunei, Somalia,  Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Egypt, Austria, Singapore, HongKong, Thailand,  Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and Many Illegal migrants in Europe and America) countries where they have no provision of having citizenship or green card too.

Our youths are suffering from Unemployment inside the country, Those who went out (bearing high rates of interest to take loan to pay their agent to find jobs) are suffering from illegal trafficking, hardship, non payment, cheated by agents, sexual abuses and many other issues, which should have been addressed by the organization. There are people who have been Jailed for several years in the gulf region which some of them are not even to be.

Many Nepali women are suffering in the hidden brothels, many dead bodies are laying in the hospitals without any information that when and how their kins are going to hear about them, many are working in the deserts without pay for several months, and these people are talking about dual citizenship? How do you issue citizenship to those people? Please give us a single way. “Give us Hope and helping hand, not your popular speech”.

Those in needs are waiting for your support not to support you to make you a political hero. We are waiting to hear from you that you have started working for those people who need your magical touch to survive not your million dollar projects.

As a Migrant worker in the Gulf, this writer has seen people are working 12-16 hrs daily in the construction sites, cleaning hospitals, hotels, roads and gardens in term of few thousands of rupees to send home monthly to save their family from hunger and sickness. A bigger part which I mentioned above is under this group of people who barely seek and have thin hope of being dual citizen then why should we are voicing this unwanted agenda? Let’s think from the impossible to make those our needs are possible. Let’s join our hands together to contribute to the Nation that we born and grown. Let’s make a change in our mind that we will go back to Nepal and die as a Nepalee.
