Nepali President Meet With Srilankan counterpart in Shanghai

Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav has sought President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s help to find a solution to overcome the political crisis in his country. President Yadav has said that President Rajapaksa has a thorough understanding about the political issues faced by Nepal as he had mediated to solve such issues in the past by visiting the country on several occasions.

Yadav who met President Rajapaksa during bi-lateral discussions in Shanghai, China held on the sidelines of Expo 2010 summit and exhibition, also said that his country needed his help in finding viable solutions to overcome the current problem.A communique from the President’s media division said the two leaders had discussed the current political issues in Nepal at length.

The Nepali President also appreciated Sri Lanka’s assistance in the development of Lumbini. Commenting on Sri Lanka’s assistance to develop Lumbini, President Rajapaksa noted that he had mooted the idea 40 years back when he was a young Member of Parliament. “However I got the opportunity to help only after becoming the President,” he had said.

During discussions, the two leaders’ attention were also drawn to initiating an educational exchange program between the two countries. They also agreed to implement a technical education exchange program between the two countries shortly.

Consensus had also been reached to adopt an approach with mutual cooperation and understanding in matters related to developing the tourism industry, the communique said. Ministers G L Peiris and Wimal Weerawansa, President’s External Affairs Coordinating Secretary Sajin Vaas Gunewardene MP, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunge, Sri Lankan Ambassador to China Karunatilake Amunugama and Sri Lankan Consul in Shanghai Majintha Jayasinghe also participated.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is on a three day official visit to China participated as a special invitee at the Expo summit, Saturday on the invitation of Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao. The Expo 2010 summit began on Saturday in line with the Expo 2010 Exhibition in Shanghai, China.

The subject of urban modernization under sustainable development was discussed at length. The need for nature friendly cities under the theme “Better City, Better Life” too was discussed extensively.

The world leaders attention was also drawn to the history of the exhibition. It was emphasized that this was not just a trade exhibition but one which showcased participating countries identity and their technological progress.

The leaders of Nepal, Finland, Hungaria, State of Bahama, the Expo 2010 General Secretary and UN General Secretary Ban-ki-moon also participated. The summit is being held under the leadership of the Chinese Premier.

Members and country delegates representing 242 organizations were also present.
