Avalanche kills nine in Manaslu Nepal

KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 24 –  An adventures trip and the happiest moment of those mountaineers ended in  a deadly avalanche near the summit of the Manaslu peak has killed at least nine mountaineers and left few others missing.
The catastrophe occurred at the camp three located at the height of 7,000 meters on Saturday night causing flood of snow sweeping the mountaineers on bid to scale the peak. Police has said they have recovered nine dead bodies and rescued 13 mountaineers mostly from European countries.

Rescue operations were halted from Sunday afternoon following rough weather situations. However, critically injured have been brought to the base camp by rescue helicopters sent from Kathmandu. “Five of the seriously injured including two Germans and three French are being treated in the capital,” said Home Ministry official Laxmi Dhakal. The dead include a Sherpa guide from Thamserku Trekking, a mountaineer each from Spain and Germany.

Manager of the Cho Oyu Trekking Anish Gupta said Italian mountaineer Alberto Magliano was among the missing. Rescue helicopters from the Simrik and Fishtail air ferried around the Manaslu region to conduct search operation throughout Sunday.
Dead bodies of German mountaineer and Sherpa guide were brought to Kathmandu by Sunday afternoon. District Police Chief Basnata Bahadur Kunwar said nationalities of other dead and missing climbers is yet to be identified.

Nepal offers some of the eight (8) highest mountain above 8000 meters, Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world and it is safely climbed by hundreds of mountaineers from around the world since first ascended  on May 9, 1956 by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition.
