APRIL 28, 2014 – POKHARA, NEPAL – Bodies of Two Missing workers of Upper Madikhola Hydro electricity project found dead under the buried collapse tunnel.Those who had gone missing after a tunnel of the under-construction site had caved in, Bodies were found dead on Sunday.
Bodies of Arjun Tamang, 42, and Nayan Bahadur Tamang, 26, of Udayapur district were found buried underneath the landslip debris. The bodies were taken to Western Regional Hospital in Pokhara for postmortem, said police.
The rescuers had on Saturday pulled out the body of Sujan Gurung from the site while 13 workers trapped inside the tunnel were rescued safely 14 hours after the incident. The victims had been working at the project site in Sildujure, Kaski, when the tunnel’s ceiling caved in as falling rocks damaged the tunnel ribs and blocked its entrance on Friday afternoon.
The Tamang duo had started work at the project just 15 days ago. “He [Nayan Bahadur] told us that he would go to Kathmandu to make passport for foreign employment. But the tragedy befell the family,” said bereaved Sangdorje, Nayan’s father.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s families and project employees have been holding talks at District Administration Office, Kaski. The bereaved families are demanding the project provide appropriate compensation.
We still don’t know if they are the only victim of the project as there may be others also injured or burried underneath. There is no clear law that those workers are insured or not for the rist they are taking while they dig the tunnel or any other risky labor work in such projects. However, they company who is the main bidder of construction of this project will pay some compensation to the deceased family shortly.
