OCT 29, 2011, KATHMANDU, Nepal – A politically unstable country with a only one international airport, Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport is the key location for those corrupt officials who are making millions of Rupees every Month by taking bribes, altering tax pays and many other illegal ways, In an attempt to eradicate the situation and to improve the people’s trust towards the current government progress, Nepal’s Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has directed the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to take strict action against an official of Tribhuvan International Airport for taking bribe.
TIA official Purna Bahadur Basnet allegedly took Rs. 100,000 bribe from a Nepali women Named Dichen Dolma Sherpa, who was departing for New York from the Kathmandu airport on October 1. Basnet was reported to have demanded Rs.150,000 from Sherpa after finding that Sherpa’s document was “incomplete.” Later, he agreed upon Rs. 100,000, TIA source said.
PM Bhattarai personally telephoned CIAA Secretary Bhagwati Kafle and Home Secretary Sushiljung Rana and directed the duo to take necessary measures against Basnet, PM’s aide Bishwodip Panday said.
PM’s directive comes after a CCTV surveillance camera at the TIA recorded a video in which Basnet is seen taking bribe from Sherpa.
This is just an example of the current scenario of Corruption in Nepal, there are thousands of other officials in Nepal Police, Government official in various departments to be investigated and punished.
We hope such a strict action and direct directives from Prime Minister, the days ahead may be corruption free Nepal in the future.
