Nepal to host BIMSTEC Summit on Aug 31

02 August 2018-Kathmandu: One of the Member state of BIMSTEC, Nepal is all set to hold a two-day Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit, starting from August 31, in Kathmandu, officials inside the Foreign Ministry informed recently.
“We have received confirmation and agreed from almost all the member nations over the date and we have started the preparations for the summit to be held in the Nepal’s capital,” the official in the Foreign Ministry informed.
The dates for BIMSTEC Summit was finalized during the cabinet meeting early June.
“We have now started the preparations for the summit.

Nepal, the host nation and the current chair of the BIMSTEC, has made preparations to discuss over the trans-border crimes, terrorism, natural calamities, extremism, and illegal trade of arms, ammunition and drugs.
This will be the fourth summit of the BIMSTEC, scheduled to be held in Kathmandu. The first ever summit of the regional organization was held in Bangkok of Thailand in the year of 2004.
The BIMSTEC, a regional body founded in July 1997, has Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand as other members of the regional forum, including Nepal.
On a related note, it will be fourth official visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi which is first in the history of any Indian Premier visit Nepal in such relatively sort period of time, Sometime it was halted for more than 15 years to visit Nepal by any Indian prime Minister in the past.

India plays the vital role on implementation and forwarding steps of agreement in action in future. SAARC has almost in coma and such regional summits in south Asia had very little progress in the past. Hope this one would be more on act then just a meet.
