03 MAY 2014 – KATHMANDU,NEPAL – Beauty pageants in Nepal were controversial in the past as some 15-25 young girls are taking part in the event where as more than a million or so similar aged girls are residing in the country. This year though there were no protest in the streets of Kathmandu demanding the ban on Miss Nepal or similar contests.
Subin Limbu was crowned the Fanta Miss Nepal World 2014 in a gala grand finale of the national beauty pageant organised by Hidden Treasure at the Army Officer’s Club, Bhadrakali, on Friday.
Twenty-three-year-old Limbu, who is originally from Dharan, was selected among 19 finalists. She received the coveted pageant crown from Miss Nepal 2013 Ishani Shrestha. The title also carried a purse of Rs 100,000, as well as the honor of becoming the WWF Young Conservation Ambassador.
“I can’t believe it. It’s like a dream come true,” Limbu announced the audience after winning the title. “Now I have to be more professional, be responsible, and for that I have to work on my knowledge and skill development.”
A BBA student, Limbu describes herself as an athlete with great love for basketball, table tennis and Tae-kwon-do. She aims to become an entrepreneur in brand building. Limbu is also the 2010 runner-up of Miss Mongol.
Prinsha Shrestha became the first runner-up and was crowned Miss Nepal Earth in the 19th edition of the national level beauty contest. She received a cheque for Rs 60,000 and was announced the new goodwill ambassador of International Union for Conservation of Nature. Shrestha also bagged the titles of ‘Beauty with Purpose’ and ‘Barnan Miss Best Complexion’.
Similarly, Sonie Rajbhandari was announced the second runner-up and crowned Miss Nepal International. She received a cheque for Rs40,000. Rajbhandari was also named ‘Honda Miss Stylist’ and ‘Hyundai Miss Friendship’.
Meanwhile, Hyrdo Solutions has pledged to provide Limbu shares worth Rs 51,000 in their hydro power project. Similarly, Hundai Motor Company has presented a Hundai car be used by the three pageant winners for official purpose.
The judge panel for this year’s pageant included Rookmangud Katawal, former chief of Nepal Army; Nakim Uddin, director of Team Quest Pvt Ltd; Dr Sabina Shrestha Pradhan, head of department of In-Vitro Fertilization at Om Hospital; Suhrid Jyoti, managing director of Jyoti Group; and Sahana Bajracharya, Miss Earth 2010.
Despite the taking of crown for a year and participating in future one or two events, none of the previous Miss Nepal has vital role in the community. They disappear within year or two and no one even remember their names.
In my opinion, this sort of beauty contest should held for the most of the girls of same age in various topics and should motivate them to utilize their beauty with brain to the community service so they can play a vital role in the community, county and in the world.
